How To Prevent Corrosion In Your Oil Pan

Insider : maritza

Corrosion is never a good thing. You especially wouldn't want to see it on your boat. Your oil pan has a high risk of getting corrosion. However, with these five tips below, you'll be even more protected from the aftermath of corrosion.

1. Check The Dipstick

  • There are some dipsticks that come with sealed o-rings. If this seal has not broken, oil could read higher in the tube than what is actually in the oil pan.
  • So the first time you pull the dipstick out, wipe it and then re-check to ensure you are getting an accurate reading.

2. Check Bottom Of Engine

  • You can check the bottom of you engine with an inspection mirror and a flashlight.
  • If you see rust, remove it with sandpaper, wipe you engine clean, and then put on Rust-Oleum paint with a 2-inch paint roller.

3. Test With A Screwdriver

  • If you dig at the rust with a screwdriver and it makes a hole, then you need to replace your oil pan.
  • Note that if the metal is still good you won't be able to make a hole with the screwdriver.

4. Replacing Your Oil Pan

  • First, span the beam of the boat with a 6-by-6-inch piece of wood.
  • Then, Use a chain fall to lift the engine and insert a blocking in between the engine mounts and stringers.

5. Choose A Pan

  • Aluminum oil pans are the typical pan used on today's boats when you are replacing them.
  • The good thing about aluminum is it won't rust, however it can corrode.
  • Aluminum pans are thicker than steel oil pans but are also harder to paint.

I hope this gives you one more tool to be able to take better care of your boat. If you would like to read more boating tip articles, click here. Thank you for reading and have a nice day!
